Overall review of Lasergrip 774
As you see me use my infrared thermometer for cooking, this product is what I use at work. Easy to use, gets the temp you are looking for and surprisingly this very cheap. But it’s very well made, no need to read the manual has three features can switch from C/F, turn on the laser to tell the temperature and turn on the backlight, simple.
Why do you need this?
You really don’t need this in your house; I have because I used to use this for chocolate work, plus bread, and fryer oil temps and playing with my dog.
You don’t need this unless you are using for restaurant going for seeing surface temperature?
To a point if you are using it for sugar or candy work, checking temperatures for pizza stones, checking if water is hot enough, proofing at home if your oven doesn’t have a build in proofer, making sure your oil isn’t too low or too high to fry. Usually, you see these used for NSF for seeing if big companies are following health code by checking the surface temps in the coolers (fridge) walk-in freezer.
This is only useful if you are taking surfaces temperatures?
Not all food safety infrared thermometer are just surface temp only, but what does that means if you only have the surface reading temperature? It means that if you decide to cook chicken, and the surface of it says 165F, this doesn’t mean it’s done in the middle this isn’t a replacement thermometer it only tells surface temps and that’s it. So what is it used for? If you are going to use for baking and frying, checking water temperatures, how hot is your dutch oven for putting bread in it or even how hot is your pizza stone, candy/ sugar work even playing with it for the pet that serious.
Are you a person that forgets to turn something off?
This automatically turns off in 10 seconds without you wasting the battery, for forgetful people.
How’s the durability?
If you drop or slam thing all the time, this doesn’t make or break when dropped, surprisingly for the price it’s very well made
What if I drop this in water?
If you drop this in water, put in rice(dry) immediately this will absorb the water that got in, which hopefully not fry it up.
How accurate is it?
Very highly accurate can be 2 to 1 degrees off. Can tell a surface temp from the range of 37 and 3/4 inches ( 96 centimeters) the range of the temp can be taken from -58 to 716F (-50 to 380C.) When you are off by that many degrees that’s not good for chocolate or sugar when tempering chocolate to 27C to 31C, and you are 2 degrees off that will cause your chocolate to have spotted areas (cocoa butter separated)
Can I use this for my pets?
I do! My dog likes it, like a laser pen on the floor.
- It is said by the developer it is off 0.2 degrees mine is 2 degrees off
- Get what you pay for
- It’s yellow. ( I hate yellow) but seriously that all I know
If you are looking to use this for sugar/candy work, chocolate, checking water temperatures, how hot is the pizza stone, making hard bread and seeing the Dutch oven is hot enough, proofing bread in the oven or even frying at home in just a pan. I highly recommend buying this if you are using this for these features. NOTE: This is what I have used it for so it doesn’t mean it only used for just this… I am sure there are other things you can temp.
